PARKWAY SCENES
Fascinating picture from the late 40's early 50's I would guess.
Notice the New Gatlinburg Inn, now just The Gatlinburg Inn. The Cliff Dwellers
can be seen on the right as well as the church on the hill which still remains.
Look at all the open ground and grass. No malls and no strips of shops.
Thanks to Vicky Hankins for provinding this picture.
A very old picture of the Gatlinburg Inn on the left, and on
the right The Gatlinburg Inn today.
For Many years there was a Drug Shop near the Mountain Mall.
I believe the Lemon Tree moved into it a few years ago, but has since been
replaced by the store "Earthbound"Unfortunately nothing else can
be clearly identified in this photo. On the right Earthbound can be seen
in the distance, even though the picture is a bit blurry.
Another shot of the Drug Store, this one from across the
steet in The Village.
Fascinating pciture of the Parkway from possibly in the 1970's. I think
this picture was taken near Midtown Lodge. You can see on the left the building
that was Parkway Pancake House and before that Duff's, at this point I think
it was called The Parkway Cafeteria or something like that. Next to it I
believe that is the building that Fosters Country Store was in. On the right
you can see the Drug Store I think that is still there. Next to theh Drug
Store is Motor Lodge, I believe that place is long gone. I think closer
to the camera is a sign that looks like a Gulf Gas Station sign, but I think
may be a Pepsi sign, could that be the Deli that used to be there advertising
that they sell Pepsi? Closer to Midtown Lodge on the ground is what looks
to be a wooden bridge of some kind. I certainly have no memory of this.
Too bad the picture isn't a little clearer and more could be made out.
The Wax Museum was one of two wax musuems in Gatlinburg. It has
been gone for about a decade, replaced with an indoor golf and games attraction.(as
shown on right picture)
The Acorn building the way it looked for forty plus
years. Now the building has been remodled with a new front (as seen below), Now
gone is Creations by Carole and Acorn Anex, although there is a listing for
Acorn Anex in the Arts & Crafts Community. As of 2008 the Acorn is now also
gone.
Acorn Building after being remodled. The
Acorn closed in 2008.
Among the first shops, I believe in Gatlinburg. The Cliff
Dwellers is show on a postcard in Gatlinburg on the Parkway many years ago.
Interesting to note the postcard says 411 North, I wonder if this was 411 back
then and not 441, or is this simply a misprint? The picture on the right show
The Cliff Dweller's as it is today. The building relocated to the Arts &
Crafts Community. A small shopping strip has taken the place of The Cliff
Dweller's in the original parkway location (see picture Below)
On the left another shot of the Parkway in the early
days, You can see the Cliff Dwellers on the Right and the Edgepark Motel on the
left. I can't quite make out the signs behind the Cliff Dwellers. Thanks to Vicky Hankins for
providing this picture. On the right is the Former location of The Cliff Dweller's
is now: Pizza Hut, Mayfield Ice Cream and Funnel Cakes, Magnet World, and
a couple other shops.
Old overview shot of Gatlinburg. Thanks to Vicky Hankins for
providing this picture.
Brochure of Homespun Valley Mountaineer Village. Thanks to Vicky
Hankins for providing this picture.
The Lemmon Tree moved
from here to the old Drug Shop by Mountain Mall, it has since gone out of
business and is now a shop called "Earthbound" and yes, that is me about 20
years ago, standing in front. I'm not completely sure, but I believe the
pictures below show the current spot.
This might be the former location of the
Lemmon Tree
The Highlanders Shop circa 1958. One of the oldest
buildings in town. Currently is a Baskins Robins. Thanks to Bob Howard for
supplying this picture. Below on the right is the building today.
Long John Silver's on the Parkway. It was a neat place
to sit and eat upstairs by the window, overlooking the Parkway. Later another
Old Time Photo Studio went in upstairs while Long John Silver's remained
downstairs. On the right is a current picture of the Long John Silvers location,
next to what was once The Highlanders shop, where Baskin Robbins Now resides,
the building in the middle with the wooden front used to be Long John Silvers,
notice that the spot obviously looks smaller, things have changed here,
the candy store on the right, however has not changed.

Ogle's Buffet, this picture dates back to the 1960's, one of
the first restaurants in Gatlinburg. This has been a Hard Rock Cafe since
the late 90's (see picture on right) I ate at the Buffet once, it was a
neat spot overlooking the river. It looks much different here. Notice how
there is a parking lot where now the River Mall is.
Overview of Gatlinburg Circa 1970, shows Ogle's Buffet, I'm not
sure if this was the same building that was Ogle's Buffet in the 1990's
or not, but it looks about the same location. Also see Howard
Johnson's in the background, and is that Ogle's old General Store (The first
store in Gatlinburg I think) at the location of Mountain Mall?. Thanks to
Bob Howard for supplying this picture.
An Old Time Photo Studio where either Earthquake or Treasure
Golf is located now. I believe it is in the Earthquake location.
The Parkway Pancake House operated from aproximately 1992 through
2007 offering some of the best breakfast deals in town and had had good
window views of the Parkway and a piano inside. In 2008 Bubba Gump opened
in this spot (see picture on right)
There use to be a Ruby Tuesday's in Gatlinburg just before you
get to East Parkway across the street from The Best Western Hotel Crossroads
which has access to both roads Parkway and East Parkway where the picture
on the left was taken from. A Cuban Restaurant called "Havana Dreams"
now has moved into this building (see photo below) It opened sometime around
late 2007, I believe. Also seen in the photo on the right is The Sweet Fanny
Adams theatre and The Little Italian American Restaurant which is also now
gone.
Havana Dreams now occupies Ruby Tuesday's
An old Shell Station Downtown. I'm not sure where this is located,
but it tends to remind me of a building near Hilbilly Golf, although that
probably isn't it.Thanks to Bob Howard for providing this picture.
On The Left - Gatlinburg Sky Lift, Circa 1950's, notice the single
seats. Thanks to Bob Howard for supplying this picture. In the middle Sky
Lift Picture from 1963, Thanks to Vicky Hankins for providing this picture.
On the right an old black and white photo on the sky lift, date unknown,
thanks to Vicky Hankins for providing this picture.
Early shot of the Twin Islands Motel. Picture on the right show
the motel today.
Inside The Treehouse Restaurant, located next to Ober Gatlinburg,
burned in the mid 90's but the building still remains and is now Maxwell's
Seafood Restaurant, (See picture on right) and the tree is still in the
roof.
Unfortunately another not so clear picture. Waldo Pepper's where
Crawdady's is now located (see picture on right). It's ashame this fine
place went out, it was a nice reasonably priced place with a view of the
Parkway. Remember the airplane fries? I believe before being Waldo Pepper's
it was a place called the S & N Restaurant
These pictures were taken at the "Elvis Hall of Fame" museum that use to
be in Gatlinburg. These pictures were taken in 1987. I'm not sure how long this
musuem has been gone but it has been gone I'd say at least 15 years. I'm not
even sure where exactly it was, although I'm inclined to say it was somewhere
around where Riverbend Mall is. Yes that is me in the 2 pictures on
top.
The picture on the left is Fosters Counry Store, an
old style Gatlinburg shop, that lasted just a couple years longer than Rebel's
Corner. I believe this was in the current location of the Convention Center. The
picture to the right was the second and smaller Rebel's Corner that actually
lasted a year or two after the original went out. For about
10
years the store Park Place, which was very much like Rebel's Corner, occupied the
building, along with another Old Time Photo. It is now a couple of new
shops.
